Chapter History
Guyandotte Chapter No. 89, order of the Eastern Star was instituted August 12, 1920 and received its Charter October 7, 1920. This is our 88th year to meet in the Masonic Lodge, 222 Richmond Street in Guyandotte, which was built in 1893 as a schoolhouse and where one of our deceased members, Sister Frances Moore, went to school. There were 37 member names on the Charter. We now have 202 members.
Everything was cheaper in those days. In February 1921 our first star rug cost $59.90 and the binding was $3.25. We either received donations from the members or they raised money to help furnish the Chapter room. November 8, 1934 Sister Golda Smith (deceased) was instrumental in buying the new Bible with money she had collected. May 13, 1943 Brother E. F. Bullington (deceased) gave the Altar top. October 12, 1946 Brother Arlen Wilcox (deceased) made a ballot box with the Chapter furnishing the materials. April 12, 1945 a fund was started with a donation from the past officers to buy an electric signet. On February 24, 1949 a committee was formed to buy a piano. The first piano was purchased September 28, 1949 for the sum of $250. April 12, 1945 Brother William S. Rice (deceased) made the pedestals and the Worthy Matron, Sister Ruth Frost (deceased) painted the flowers and emblems on each and they are still used in our Chapter room today. August 26, 1954 the Jr. Past Matron bought the refrigerator for all to use. Worthy Matron, Sister Kathleen Rowsey’s (deceased) special project was to buy a silver coffee and tea server and it was used for the first time February 13, 1958 for Grand Visitation. Another of her projects was the kneeling pad around the Altar. June 26, 1952 the new labyrinth was dedicated. March 24, 1955 the first Friendship Night was held with 112 present.
Besides the chicken dinners, we have served many dinners and receptions in our 88 years of existence. November 23, 1943, we served a dinner for the Job’s Daughters for 25 cents a plate, making a profit of $8.
