Chapter History
Romney Chapter No. 84 was Chartered on October 2, 1919 by a group of ladies from the Romney Area who were members of Alkire No. 10 Keyser. They petitioned the Grand Chapter of West Virginia for a Chapter to be formed in Romney. At the 6th session of Grand Chapter the petition was granted. Sister Sallie D. Keneeream signed the report of the Committee on Charters and Dispensations.
The theme for the new Chapter was “Dream constantly of the ideal, work ceaselessly to perfect the real.”
The first meeting was held with 19 women and 7 men who were initiated into Romney Chapter No.84. 16 officers were installed. Marshall was not installed in 1921, Associate Patron installed in 1929. The first WM was Anne Ruckman Initiation fee was $5.00 annual dues $1.80. Meetings were held on the second floor of the “Literary Hall” located at the main intersection in the town of Romney, later moved to the present location in 1974.
Romney celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1969 with 4 Charter members present. The last Charter member passed away in 1995 who served as an officer each year until 2 years prior to her death. Our present Worthy Matron, Helen Cheshire, has served as Worthy Matron of Romney Chapter 7 times and we thank her for her support. Lilburn Henderson (deceased) served at Worthy Patron of Romney Chapter 8 times.
