Chapter History
This is a newspaper account from a Buckhannon paper, telling about Buckhannon members going to Rock Cave to institute Aletha Chapter there on November 20, 1916.
Aletha Chapter No. 82 was instituted on Thanksgiving day and was named after Hettie Aletha Boggs, who was the first Worthy Matron.
Proud of their labor of love in helping Hon. Thomas J. Davis, the then Worthy Grand Patron, give life to a new Chapter, someone of Buckhannon Chapter No. 18 sent the following accounts to the newspaper: “The Eastern Star”
“The Buckhannon Chapter being invited and requested by the Worthy Grand Patron, Thomas J. Davis, of Harrisville, W. Va. to assist in instituting a new local chapter at Rock Cave, we began to look about us to see if we could find the required number of officers to go. We were compelled to go with our stations partly filled owing to sickness and bad weather, as a result we were not able to exemplify the work we had hoped to do.
“Stations were filled as follows: ‘W M. Janett Johnson; W. P. F. M. Farnsworth; A. M. Della Martin; Cond. Edna Farnsworth Assoc. Cond. Leta Snodgrass; Secret. Minnie Arnett; Treas. May Watkins; Chap. Jennie Talbott; Adah, Sallie Cutright; Ruth, Lillian Cressler; Esther, Mary Morgan; Martha, Ella Williams; Electa, Pearl Simons; Warder, Jessie Watkins.
“Faithful to the duties of our order, we set out for a cold, muddy drive of 15 miles. Be assured dear: readers, there was no complaining, for each and everyone hugely enjoyed every beloved milepost we passed, looking eagerly and rejoicingly for the next to appear. About 6 o’clock we were happily located in front of the Boggs hotel: in Rock Cave. Within we found a warm, hearty, cordial welcome that language fails to express. In a short time we were ushered into the dining room. There we were served a delicious, bountiful dinner consisting of all the good things that “the high prices of today” will allow us to enjoy. To this we did ample justice.
“Later we repaired to the Masonic Temple, and what should we find? A new beautiful hail, beautifully decorated and carpeted, also equipped with all modern equipments. A hail of which those good people have reason to be proud. It bespeaks interest and enthusiasm on their behalf.
“Near midnight our work was completed. A new chapter was instituted with nearly twenty-five members, with a number more to come in later. About five o’clock the next morning as we caught a glimpse of bright lights in many of the cheerful, happy homes of our own town, we felt well paid for our long, slow cold drive; not in dollars and cents, but in the consciousness of not only spending our Thanksgiving Day in returning our sincere thanks to the Giver of all good and perfect gifts both spiritual and temporal but also in having done our part in the institution of another chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. An order known and honored among the institutions of the land as one whose foundation is laid upon the enduring principle of Truth.
“We are confident from the intense interest manifested by the members of this new chapter that in future many troubled souls will receive from them helpful advice; many sorrowing hearts be comforted; and the destitute be liberally aided.
