Chapter History
After much preliminary work a meeting was called to be held at the Masonic Hall, on “B” Street, April 28, 1916 for the purpose of signing a petition for a dispensation to organize a Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in St. Albans. The name Martha Washington was selected for the chapter
On June 23, 1916, a banquet was held at the Baptist Church, honoring
Tiskelwah Chapter No. 45, after which adjournment was made to the Masonic Hall. Alvin Barnhart called the meeting to order. The name Martha Washington must be changed since there was already a chapter so named. St. Albans Chapter was selected. The chapter was instituted with thirty-six petitioners receiving the obligation from Brother Wilbur Stump, Worthy Grand Patron.
Our meetings are held on the Second and Fourth Fridays of every month at the Masonic Temple, St. Albans, West Virginia.
In June 1954 fifty-six members were granted demits to Nitro’s new chapter. The officers of St. Albans Chapter exemplified the ritualistic opening and closing of the Nitro Chapter U. D. Our chapter was very happy to have the privilege of doing this. The years seem to have wings. Each year has greeted a new corps of officers who have worked together for the good of the chapter.
The principles of our Order are activated and made manifest through its benevolent work. Donations are made annually for the Masonic and O.E.S. Homes, Hospitals, Welfare Relief and Educational Aid. The Order of Rainbow for Girls is endorsed by our chapter.
Sister Florence E. Howes, Past Matron, became a member of the St. Albans Chapter No. 79 on September 11, 1916. Since being Worthy Matron she has kept right on serving, being treasurer for twenty-five years. She received this honor on March 8, 1946.
The above information was collected from a Directory that was made in the year 1957-1958. The Worthy Matron was Irene M. Moore and the Worthy Patron was Charles D. Miller.
