Chapter History
Berkeley Chapter No 77 was organized on September 7, 1915. The Charter was granted November 26, 1915.
Berkeley Chapter No 77 has always been very busy with fund raising and with community service. Some of the things we do that we are so well known for include baking and selling the most delicious pies in the Tri-State area. We are also famous for the Ham Pot Pie Dumpling (known as Hound Ears around here) dinners we serve our Masonic Lodge (Deford 88) every year. Our Past Matrons and Past Patrons also hold coffee breaks for weary travelers during Thanksgiving weekend and the July 4 holiday. We hand out hundreds of dozens of homemade cookies, brownies and muffins, along with gallons and gallons of coffee, tea, hot chocolate and lemonade. We meet wonderful people from all over the country.
The Eddie Stotler Estarl Scholarship has sponsored at least six different students since its inception. Most of these have been from the Berkeley Springs area.
We are also active in supporting our local Veteran’s Hospital in Martinsburg, WV. We try to go at least once a year to play bingo with the nursing home patients at the hospital. We also help with the ice cream social that is held on Memorial Day. We have also helped with picnics and cookouts over Memorial Day, as well. We have decorated Christmas trees at the VA hospital and have joined other chapters in our district in singing Christmas Carols for our veterans. This past year, we also collected personal items for the patients at the local nursing home.
Berkeley Chapter also tries to take care of our sisters and brothers who are in need during the year. We have donated to the welfare of members who have been sick and needed help to pay for transportation or lodging. We also fix “goodie baskets” for our shut-ins every Christmas. They look forward to the homemade cookies and other goodies we give them. We are also always supportive of Rainbow Girls.
