Chapter History
Grantsville Chapter #73 was instituted on October 6,1915 with eleven charter members. Mattie J. Workman was Worthy Grand Matron and Wilbur Stump was Worthy Grand Patron in 1915-1916. In the 1940s as our membership grew, dues were $1.50 per year. Fifty years ago, we had a full slate of officers who worked their way up through the chairs and we also had eighteen members in the choir. We have always been known for our delicious covered dish dinners. During the 60’s and 70’s, common dishes were tasty fodder beans and shredded chicken. On January 1962 we had 89 members.
Sister Lelah K. Ball was Worthy Grand Matron in 1956-1957,a very kind and lovely lady. Her session was”In His Name Session” and her Worthy Grand Patron died June 28, 1957 prior to Grand Chapter.Von Yoak was one who sang in a barber shop quartet at Leah’s Grand Session. Her husband, L.L. Ball who was initiated with Lelah in 1926 became quite a ritualist and is a legend in our chapter as one who would practice the ritual work till midnight.
Fifty two years from Lelah K. Ball’s session, Dawn Fox, Worthy Grand Matron will have her Grand Chapter Session, “Nature’s Life and Beauty”. In 1970, Tom and Dawn Fox moved to Grantsville. One of the first people that Dawn met and had lunch with was Lelah K. Ball who invited her to join the order.
Our well known tenor, Ivy Von Yoak , who has sung at many Grand Chapters, in 1976 was honored to sing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” in Cleveland, Ohio as a Bicentennial salute to the united States at General Grand Chapter.Freda Yoak and Delma Kemper have sung many years in the Grand Choir.
In 1984, Paula Roberts was appointed Grand Electa by Opal Dearian and Denver Roberts, a dual member from Glenville #90, was elected Grand Sentinel. This married couple served in the same Grand Family that year.
In recent years, we have , on election days, taken donations for hot dogs to earn money for our projects. We have many generous hard working, faithful members who have given many yers of service to Grantsville #73 and WV Grand Chapter. They have left wonderful memories and set examples for us to follow. May we all continue to follow the “Star”!
