Chapter History

West Union O.E.S. #56 received it’s charter on October 4, 1911 with a membership of 28. We currently have 125 members. Over the years we have had eight Grand Representatives, one Grand Officer, 83 Worthy Matrons and 45 Worthy Patrons. West Union Chapter is one of the few chapters that shares their number with their Masonic Lodge. We will be celebrating our 100th Anniversary in October 2011. We hope you will all join us for this celebration. It will be here before we know it.

The chapter participates annually in the West Union Fest by selling Root Beer Floats, Orange Soda Floats and baked goods on the street in front of the Lodge. This is a main fund raiser for the chapter and we are always looking for hot sunny weather during this festival. Our chapter has been a proud supporter for many years of the Darleen Swentzel Writing Contest that is held at the Doddridge County Elementary School each spring.

For many years the chapter has donated money to the Ronald McDonald House in Morgantown in memory of each member who has passed away. During the 2007-2008 year we have lost five members and we have taken in four new members. Like many small chapters, we struggle to keep our doors open. We are saddened when we lose members but rejoice to bring in new members. We frequently call on other chapters to fill our chairs for initiations and Grand Visitations. While it would be nice to be able to fill all chairs from within the chapter, it is a true blessing for us to have so many other chapters willing to help us out. Thanks to all of you.
