Chapter History

On May 27. 1911, petitioners assembled in the Summersville Masonic Hall to establish a local Order of Eastern Star (OES). On June 10, 1911 Wakoma Chapter, U.D., Order of the Eastern Star, was instituted. In 1956 the Masonic Lodge, A.F. & AM. No. 7(3, built a new home and graciously permitted Wakoma #52 to meet there. In return, OES members would share in the upkeep of the building, especially the kitchen and dining room. Initially they aided in preparing the building for occupancy and purchased equipment for the kitchen and dining area. Moving to the new Masonic Building was a busy and exciting time. All the furniture was cleaned or repainted and the new building made ready. Wakoma Chapter #52 held its first meeting in the beautiful new Masonic Hall on December 31, 1956.

Members were engaged in various fund raising activities to cover expenses. Perhaps the cleverest and easiest project was the Christmas Tree Project at that lint, meeting. In response to a letter mailed, 65 Christmas cards containing donations adorned the tree. Monies obtained through donations and fund raising projects were applied on kitchen cabinets, a 3 compartment sink, plumbing, refrigerator, blinds, twelve tables, fifty chairs and an electric stove. Purchased for the chapter room were 7 special chairs and a special rug. Many items used in the chapter room are in honor or in memory of the charter members or past matrons and patrons.
Annually the Chapter contributes to many charitable organizations in addition to aiding others in times of distress or need.
