Chapter History
Kanawha Chapter No. 38, O.E.S. was instituted on September 26, 1908. We celebrated our 100th birthday on September 13, 2008.
The Indian name “Kanawha” has more than one translation, but generally means “the great river” and “the place of white stones.”
Guiding Star Chapter No. 72, Gauley Bridge, West Virginia merged with Kanawha Chapter in May of 2000. We are very fortunate to have those members several of whom have become very active in our Chapter.
Joan Thomson was appointed Grand Esther by Sister Maxine Justice and Brother “Red Martin” in 1970-71 for the Guiding Star Grand Chapter Session. “Joan served this Grand Chapter as Worthy Grand Matron for its 75th year; she and Brother George Simon, Worthy Grand Patron presided over the 75th Diamond Tiara Session - 1977-78.
Joan was appointed as a General Grand Chapter Committee Member and served on the Fraternal Relations Committee 1979-1982 for Sister Thelma Bailey, Most Worthy Grand Matron.
Her Chapter was again honored by her appointment to serve as Worthy Grand Esther for Sister Maxine Justice, Most Worthy Grand Matron and Brother Robert Baker, Most Worthy Grand Patron for the 1994-1997” Guiding Star Assembly” of General Grand Chapter.
