Chapter History
Wetzel Chapter #27 was organized, October 12, 1907 by Stephen Waterhouse Jr., W.G.P., Assisted by the officers of Ravenswood. We have tried to find records as to why Wetzel was the name adopted. There was a charter member, Flora Wetzel, maybe that’s the key. Records show it was presented to change the name to spencer but failed.
The chapter has two money making projects each year, a booth at the West Virginia Black Walnut Festival and Sunday lunch during the Heritage Days Celebration. Wetzel Chapter has given to many projects, one of the biggest was a circulation desk at spencer library costing $6800.00. In addition to supporting grand chapter projects, the chapter has participated in the Roane County Helping Hand with food and money and with the Ruby Bradley Essay contest by helping to provide U. S. Savings Bonds for each winner. Also the chapter prepares dinner for Moriah Lodge the first Saturday of each month.
Wetzel Chapter is known for walnut pies at the Walnut Festival in September every October.
