Chapter History
Pennsboro #26 Chapter of the OES began October 14, 1907 with 33 charter members. They met on the second floor above a commercial business on Masonic Avenue in downtown Pennsboro. There was a long creaky, wooden stairway to the large meeting area. The ornate furniture was handcrafted by artisans from Starr Furniture. These magnificent pieces are still beautiful and in use today. Although the meetings are at the same address, the original building was torn down and the lot bought by the Masons. During the construction of the current building, the Masons had bought Ellenboro’s Masonic building and all meetings were held there. In 1994 the new building was completed.
The members of the chapter have had many wife - husband combinations, cousins, aunts, uncles, siblings, etc. The first father - daughter combination was Ralph Blankenship Linda Hamilton in 1971. There are currently 7 wife - husband and 2 mother - daughter combinations. The chapter membership rose to well over a hundred, however today there are 75 members and 10 are 50 year members.
The chapter has raised and given monies for charitable and Masonic needs. $ 1000.00s have been given to the Masons to purchase the lot, get the financing for the building, provide needed appliances, pay off the mortgage, cleanings, and misc, expenses. Through dinners, auctions, and plain giving donations have been made to local needs and OES requests.
Participation in the beautification of Pennsboro finds 2 large wooden baskets filled with blooming plants on the wide front porch in the summer and silk decorations during the winter.
We goofed! The 100 year anniversary was advertised and was celebrated with a special program, dedications and refreshments, but in the wrong year. It was done in 2006 and then completely forgotten in 2007.
