Chapter History

In February, 1932 I became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. I became very unhappy on the meeting night in March, 1932. The chapter then was very similar to chapters today. It was the visit of the Worthy Grand Matron. The Associate Conductress was unable to be there. The Worthy Matron had me to fill the station. Back then the Worthy Matrons had all the work performed. One of the first was balloting. I never saw this ballot box and had no idea what to do or where to get the ballot box. The Worthy Grand Matron really racked me over the coals since I had no idea what to do; however, there was a Past Grand Matron who saved my life. She was at our chapter the month before when I was taken in the month before, so she got up and addressing the Worthy Grand Matron, asked her if she could find the ballot box the next meeting after becoming an Eastern Star.

Our building was second floor over a grocery store. We had a coal stove and had to carry coal up the stairs to heat the chapter room, and also had to take the ashes out afterward. Also, we had no water, so to make coffee, etc we had to carry water from the neighbors’ cisterns. It is quite different today! In due time, the Masons decided to build a new hall, so we all had to start having money making affairs to help out. One thing we found was on the east coast a place was buying eggshells. So we saved, washed and dried our egg shells. We sold quite a few, but in due time the company stopped buying them. Then we collected newspapers. By the time we had collected enough, the company was no longer buying them. We had a time destroying all of them! We had quite a number of money making affairs. The Masons had the new building started so the Eastern Stars once again started making all kinds of things to make money to help furnish the new dining room, etc. One of the money making projects that really started was the 4th of July Fair. Charldean Hutchinson was Worthy Matron at the time. She called me one day and asked me if’ I would help her. She had a corn popper and wanted to know if I would go up to the 4th of July celebration at the Courthouse in Ripley and sell popcorn. We bought a 100 lb sack of popcorn. We popped it and made $100.00 that year! The next year we added lemonaide and sold two 100 lb sacks of corn. That is how our money making projects started and they are still going strong today. We are a small chapter, but we still work together to keep the traditions and the virtues of the Eastern Star alive and well in Cottageville, West Virginia.

God’s blessing to all. Hazel Wright 75 year member Cottageville Chapter #16
