Chapter History

Camden on Gauley Chapter No. 161 was instituted on January 23, 1983 at Glade Elementary School in Cowen, WV. On March 11, 1984 we were constituted at Glade Elementary School. Brother Raymond Lusk was WGP and Sister Mary V. Corbitt was WGM. Sister Genevieve E. Bee, PGM, was Grand Secretary.

Previously there was a Chapter (Camden on Gauley Chapter No. 125) that went defunct on January 27, 1933, due to the Lodge Hall burning. Some members affiliated with Yew Pine Chapter No. 65 at Richwood. When Yew Pine Chapter was done away with on July 31, 1994, several members affiliated with Camden Chapter.
Our first WM was Sister Wanda Russell and WP was Denzil “Glen” Russell.

Sister Gwendolyn Carpenter was WGM with Brother Howard Elliott, WGP in 1990-91. Brother Harold Carpenter was WGP with Sister Mary Ellen Shannon, WGM in 1999-2000.

We were so proud of Gwendolyn Carpenter and Harold Carpenter who served as Worthy Grand Matron and Worthy Grand Patron. Their home chapter of Webster Springs No. 145 and our chapter were so happy to join together to celebrate their great accomplishments. They are such tireless workers who gave so much to all of us over the years and continue to do so now. Our chapter is very grateful for all of their help and service. Without them there would be a terrible void.
Throughout the years we have been blessed with many Sisters & Brothers who have guided us and supported all of our endeavors, to them we give great Thanks!

A final note: It is interesting to see how far we have come. We have had God and His love with us all the way. How else could we have made it this far. Our first year as a chapter our scripture was from the love chapter in our Bible, I Corth. 13:13. This year it seems ironic that our chapter scripture is still love centered, I John 4:7, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.” Our Motto is “Love One Another” and our Theme is “Let all you do be done in Love”. This truly sums up our wonderful officers and members--they have been blessed with a tremendous gift of love which they have never failed to share.
