Chapter History
Wayne Chapter was instituted on August 6, 1960, at the Wayne Masonic Lodge Hall in Wayne, WV. According to the Grand Secretary, Brother Harold H. Brammer, the weather was hot and humid but did not interfere with the warmth of welcome or the enthusiasm of the member of Wayne Chapter UD and the 148 Eastern Star members and visitors that were packed in the chapter room. There were 48 charter members, 7 are still members and the other 41 are deceased.
At a special meeting on November 5, 1960, with 101 members present, the chapter was constituted as Wayne Chapter No. 156. (According to the old record books, Wayne had an Eastern Star Chapter No. 25 but the charter was “arrested” in 1923, and it took another 37 years to get a new chapter.)
Sister Danzil Endicott and Brother Luther Endicott (husband and wife) were installed as our first Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron. Both remained members and hard workers in the chapter as long as their health would permit, always encouraging everyone to do their best. (Both are now deceased.) They both received their 50-year membership pins before their passing, and last year their daughter, Sister Samye Faye Arthur, received her 50-year pin. Sister Danzil received an appointment as a Grand Representative to California not too long after the chapter was constituted.
Our chapter members were busy raising funds by holding rummage sales, selling candy and pecans, etc. Dues were only $3.00 per year so I guess fund raising was a must at that time. In later years we have rented a booth at the Wayne County Fair and sold brown beans and corn bread and hot dogs and did really well with that. That’s a lot of hard work but was a good fund raiser. Also, we produced a cookbook called “Star Recipes of Wayne” and sold 500 copies of that.
Since the 1970’s we have had one grand officer, Grand Adah, in 1982. I am not aware of any other grand officers but didn’t have time to read all the old minutes books.. We have had several grand representatives and committee members down through the years. Our latest Grand Representative was Sister Juanita Murphy, who’s commission expired in May 2008.
It has been hard the last few years trying to keep the chapter going but with the help of dual members we are alive and well and looking forward to a new year.
