Chapter History
It had been a dream of many Stars living in Weirton, but members in surrounding Chapters, to have an Eastern Star Chapter in their very own city. This was not possible until a Masonic Lodge was established in Weirton. After the Weirton Masonic Lodge was instituted, a group of ladies formed the “Stella Club”. They had several money making projects the following year to support the opening of a new Chapter.
In November of 1949, a few Stars met to discuss opening an Eastern Star Chapter in Weirton. A second meeting was held and the ladies decided to canvas all Eastern Star members living in Weirton to see if they were interested in serving as an officer or a committee member. The ladies met with Past Grand Officers for instructions on how to get a Chapter started.
A meeting was held at the Weirton Masonic Lodge on Main Street in Weirton on April 13, 1950. It was attended by a group of Eastern Star members whom were interested in starting a Chapter in Weirton. Alta Schenley, Kermit Fish, Kathleen Jolly, and William Schenley were selected to serve as head officers when the new Chapter would be instituted. Sina Sample was selected to act as secretary.
Motions were made and carried that the first meeting be held on April 29,1950 The institution would be held at Edgewood School with a dinner for Charter members and guests to be served by the Edgewood PTA members. Everything progressed as planned.
The form for Charter members was signed by fifty Eastern Star members in good standing. Thus, began our beloved Weirton Chapter #147 in Weirton. The dream became a reality!
