Chapter History

Petersburg Chapter #146 was born in the year of a major flood in the area. After many dreams and much planning, the charter was presented on November 12, 1949, and the Chapter was constituted. Portia Hamrick was Worthy Grand Matron. Sister Fleta Shobe was the first Worthy Matron and Harry Phillips was the first Worthy Patron. They met in the Masonic Lodge rooms over Allen’s Drug Store on Main Street. There were a total of 46 charter members. (Six of them, including the first Worthy Matron, are alive today.)

The Chapter grew in numbers and enthusiasm over the years. Its activities included annual picnics for its members and the Masons and special activities within the chapter. Major fund raising included White Elephant Sales, fruit cake sales, knife sales, pecan sales, catering, and on one occasion a Bridge and Fondue Party. The chapter found that the small quarters were extremely limiting, and for several years it was necessary to move all of the paraphernalia to a church fellowship hall for special events such as Grand Visitation.

Plans for a new building began in 1978, Major fund-raising was implemented with auction sales and donations of work and funds. The cornerstone was laid on August 18, 1979. It was a time of great anticipation and exceptional unity as the building became a reality. The first meeting in the new building was held on December 1, 1980. It was a realization of a dream, and the chapter celebrated with new projects to enhance the chapter room, the fellowship hall, and the kitchen. New fund-raising projects were implemented, including an ice cream stand at the annual 4th of July activities in the park.

The members place a high value on the traditions and history of Petersburg Chapter. In the beginning of the current year, five long-time active members have died, leaving a void that it is beyond filling with the extraordinary talents which they offered to the Chapter. Their influence remains, and the chapter will persevere as new members and innovative ideas challenge future success.
