Chapter History
The history of Newburg Chapter started on August 22, 1947, when brother Hugh Denison of Aurora Lodge #43 went to W.G.P.. Brother Clarence W. Hybert for information concerning the formation of an Eastern Star chapter at Newburg. On September 26th the petition properly filled out with forty-seven signatures, twenty-four men and twenty-three women, accompanied by the fee of $47.00
This building had many many steps outside as well as small narrow corner steps to the upstairs. No parking. Coal stoves, a fire would have to be built before each meeting. The steps were so narrow and steep that at one meeting Adaline McGinnis had a heart attack during the meeting. The ambulance came but had to carry her downstairs on a straight back chair because there was not enough space to put her on a bed.
After several years, the building became unsafe for many people, the floor would begin to shake. That’s when it was time to think about land and a new building. This project started the first week in October of 1987 when George and Dorothy Sinclair gave Aurora Lodge and Eastern Star land on Route 92. After the legal work was finished, Brother Don Brewer started excavating and the septic system was completed. Many people pitched in and helped with whatever needed done. Blocks & bricks were donated as well as electrical and plumbing materials. At one point, money ran out to put the building under roof. It was agreed by members of Newburg Chapter #143 to help the masons complete this project by loaning them money and them signing an agreement that the Order of the Eastern Star would be allowed to use the building for their meetings. When the masons sold the old building they would repay the chapter the money used to complete the building. Everyone agreed to work together and was happy. With so many volunteers donating labor, money, and products, the building was completed in 1988 approximately one year from the date started completely debt free. When this project started it seemed impossible, but determination and faith was the main factors that seen us through.
The corner stone was laid April 9th. 1988. Don and Eleanor Brewer were the first Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron to serve in the new building. Helen Walker, W.G.M. and Ron McNeely W. G.P. were the first to hold a grand visitation in the new building on April 11, 1989.
On December 16th. 1989, Marguerite Holmes and Jack McGinnis were serving as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron, Eleanor Brewer was serving as Grand Esther for Jeannette Heckman and Dan Hawn. It was a terrible winter night. Going home after our grand visitation, Sister Lottie Hebb was killed about a mile from the lodge hall. She and her husband Ray had donated a new piano for the new building.
Dec. 31, 1994, Terra Alta Chapter merged with Newburg Chapter.
