Chapter History
On July 18, 1941 a meeting was held in the Masonic Temple in Dunbar, WV for the purpose of organizing an Eastern Star Chapter. On August 2, 1941, Dunbar Chapter was instituted under the direction of John Zimmer, Worthy Grand Patron. At this meeting 29 petitioners were made members on sight and there were 11 demitted members, making a total of 40.
We sold everything to keep a little money in our treasurer. Our first labyrinth was made of oil cloth; our signet was just a paper one which hung on a stand; our pedestals were home made and very plain; the piano keys stuck and the pedals squeaked so loud it was disturbing.
We have made and sold apple butter for years which included the Fall Festival in Dunbar. But in recent years because of aging members this has been discontinued. We continue to serve the Mason’s their St. John’s and Past Masters dinner each year. We have done a lot of work in refurnishing the Lodge Hall, such as new carpet, cabinets in kitchen, updated the bathrooms, and installed an elevator.
