Chapter History

Alderson Chapter was instituted on June 28, 1928 with 32 of 35 members initiated. The Charter for Alderson Chapter 119 was issued on October 3, 1928. Officers from Ronceverte #98 did the initiatory work. Ronceverte shortly afterwards turned their Charter in.

The first meetings were held in the old Masonic Hall which was over J. M. Alderson store, where the Presbyterian Church stands today. While the new building was being built, the chapter met in the old theater building. The new building, still used today, was occupied on June 20, 1939.

A great deal of credit for the organization of the chapter goes to Dr. W. P. Fawcett, his wife, and Edith Woodward, who was employed at the Federal Institution, and became the first Worthy Matron. Another 12 members were added the first year. Meetings were held twice a month until 1934, when it was changed to once a month. The third Tuesday was kept.

These first years the best of equipment was lacking, and a reed organ was played during the meetings. Today the chapter room is furnished with the best of equipment - a new piano added in 1997.

Our chapter is very active today and we continue to practice the virtues of charity, love and human kindness. We have always had a feeling of togetherness and promote good standards. We are grateful to Pearl K. Scott for writing the first 50 years of our history, which she related on September 10, 1978, when we observed our 50th Anniversary.

Alderson Chapter 119 has contributed three deputy instructors: Margaret Burns, Nancy Wood, and Joyce Kincaid
