Chapter History

The following is from a statement of Mr. Vause Alkire September 26, 1953 about how the chapter got started. “We were five years getting a chapter. So many people were opposed to it. Frank Dixon wrote a personal letter to a judge about getting the chapter started. Had to have permission from the Grand body of Masons before a chapter could be organized. Mr. Keolz was representative to the Grand Lodge that year and wrote to the Grand Master. After the banquet, Mr. Koelz went back for the adjournment of the Grand Lodge at Parkersburg. He was in a hurry to get back home, and under the Good of the Order it slipped through and the Charter was mailed to me.

He, together with his wife, Nan Hosack, Lena Hutson, Carrie McNeill, Ella Parsons, and Ethel Parsons agreed, and I signed all their names on the charter. It had leaked out about the Chapter going to be organized and Miss Emma Carr got a hold of it. She talked to her brother John, Bill Fazenbaker, John Offner and some others who had been opposed to it. We had a meeting to organize. The next question was who would be the first Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron. My recollection is George T. Carskadon was the Worthy Patron and Carrie McNeill Worthy Patron and Mrs. Alkire was Treasurer.

It was named after me they always said, but I always gave my wife the credit for it because she was so enthusiastic and interested over it. Some wanted to name it Queens Point, but we had a cemetery by that name. Then Potomac was mentioned, but we had an insurance company in town by that name. Four or five names mentioned and finally they agreed to call it Alkire. I can see old man Linthicum yet because they wanted to call it Alkire Chapter. He said he never heard of one being called after a man living. I said that Old Colonel Davis is still Living (the Masonic Lodge is named Davis).

Ema Stallings had a big hat with chicken feathers on it and the night we were going to initiate Frank Dixon, Mrs. Spotts was going over her stuff she had to say, and I had on this hat and had in my hand a hatchet with a blue handle and when she opened the door and saw me, she screamed and sat down on a chair and smashed it flat to the floor. The last I heard she had never made her report.
The Chapter was organized on the third floor of the Markwook Building on January 14, 1904. Original dues were ten cents a month, rituals cost seventy-five cents and initiation fee was $1.00”.

Alkire was the tenth chapter to organize in West Virginia and so there now could be a Grand Chapter of West Virginia.
