Chapter History

Instituted in April, 1924 and Chartered in November, 1924, the first Minutes were recorded Friday, April 25, 1924 but make no mention of the Petition to form a new Chapter. There is a reference to the meeting night being changed to Friday, April 25, by dispensation from the Grand Matron because of a Masonic meeting on the 24th. The first recorded Grand Visitation of Worthy Grand Matron, Carrie F. Thurm, was at a Special Meeting on September 12, 1924 with 27 Officers and Members and 26 visitors for a total of 53 present, no doubt a great attendance for that era. A second Grand Visitation was recorded on November 20, 1924 by Maude O. Curtis, Worthy Grand Matron. At this meeting, Officers for Lewisburg Chapter were installed by the Worthy Grand Matron. Although not recorded in the Minutes of the meeting, one would assume this was also when we received our Charter.

Although the Minutes contain many revealing and interesting historical facts, there is not sufficient time or space to compile the complete history. Of interest in the early years was the fact that at times then, as now, attendance was poor and the Chapter was looking for ways to improve participation. From the earliest days, the members worked at furnishing the kitchen and dining room, and raising funds by serving dinners to various groups and Organizations. It was surprising to learn that the Chapter served dinner for the Masons as early as 1924. At this writing, it is not known if or when these services were suspended. However, in 1985, dinners were again served at a nominal fee to the Masonic bodies, the goal being to raise funds, maintain a good rapport with our Masonic brothers and perhaps to assist in improving their attendance with the enticement of a “fabulous” dinner. This project has been very successful and has become our best fund raiser. Currently the Chapter serves a minimum of three dinners per month and special dinners as requested whenever possible.

In April of 1985, Lewisburg Chapter was offered the concession stand at the Lion’s Club Antique Show and Sale in June held at the State Fairgrounds in Fairlea. A committee was appointed and the three day event was a huge success, so much so that the Chapter was offered the same opportunity each year for the next 20 years. Due to the increasing cost of transporting the equipment from the Lodge Hall to the Fair Grounds and the decrease in able bodied members to work at the stand over the three day period, it was decided to decline the offer in 2006, ending a 20 year run.
