Chapter History
Calista Boyd Chapter # 104. Red Jacket, WV was originally chartered as Thacker Chapter on August 23, 1923 with 27 charter members.
The organizations moved to the town of Matewan, WV in August 1929 and the name was changed October, 1931 after the Masonic Lodge changed their name to honor Hugh C. Boyd because of his generosity and hard work in securing the land and new building for our Brother Masons and The Order of Eastern Stars. Our new name became Calista Boyd Chapter # 104 at this time.
The building location took another move to Red Jacket, WV in 1980. Our first meeting in this building was the initiation of Barbara Gooslin and Wanetta Sansom.. This is the site of our building today.
During this time our chapter has survived some tough times. The worst probably being the Great Flood of 1977, when the town of Matewan and its surrounding areas was practically destroyed. What paraphernalia and records that could be salvaged were and with this and a great fraternal spirit we moved on.
Our chapter has had many highlights in its time also with the appointment of our first Grand Chapter Officer being Sister Gail Hatfield in 1988-1989. She was appointed Grand Warder. Sister Patricia Staten was appointed Grand Ruth for 2003-2004 and for 2004-2005, Sister Darlene Hannah was also appointed Grand Ruth.
We feel that our greatest blessing has been the achievement of a number of Fifty Year Members. Sister Daisy Nowlin, a 61 year member, is a direct descendant (a niece) of several of the chapters charter members. She is still very active in our chapter holding the office of Treasurer. Sister Matoma Sansom, a 59 year member, also participates in chapter as her health permits. Our six other 50 year members at this time include Patricia Staten who is also very active in not only our chapter but also in Grand Chapter. The others are as follows.
